The Heart Of Queer Dallas

Named For A Legend.
Built For You.

In 1989, Sue Ellen’s threw open her doors on Cedar Springs and took her name from the baddest woman on Dallas — all glamour, grit, and Texas nerve. The crowd that walked in made it home.

For 37 years we’ve been the living room of queer Big D: a little bit honky-tonk, a whole lot of heart, and a welcome that’s never asked you to be anything but yourself.

The Long Run

Thirty-Seven Years On Cedar Springs

  1. 1989

    The Doors Open

Sue Ellen’s opens on the Cedar Springs strip — named for the baddest woman on Dallas television, built for the realest crowd in Texas.

  2. The ’90s

    Home On The Block

Cedar Springs becomes the heart of queer Dallas, and Sue Ellen’s becomes its living room — a place to two-step, find your people, and be exactly who you are.

  3. 2010

    Two Floors, One Family

A new home a few doors down: two floors of live bands, drag, and disco, plus the patio that’s been packed ever since.

  4. Today

    Still Standing

As lesbian bars vanished across America, Sue Ellen’s held the line — now one of the largest and longest-running anywhere in the country.

  5. Always

    Y’all Means All

Thirty-seven years on, the welcome hasn’t changed: whoever you are, however you love, there’s a stool with your name on it.

Why It Matters

One Of The Last
Of Her Kind.

America has lost the vast majority of its lesbian bars — from hundreds down to roughly thirty. Every one still open is a piece of history, a refuge, and a fight worth winning.

Sue Ellen’s is proud to be one of them: still here, still loud, still yours. When you pull up a stool, you’re keeping a legacy alive.

Everybody’s Welcome

Y’all Means All.

Whoever you are, however you love — you already belong here. That’s been the promise since 1989, and it’s not going anywhere.
